Charleston…The Land of the Dogs!

Not Just A Dog!

Coming from the Northeast, most families see their dog as exactly that – a dog. However, in Charleston, your dog is another child! Everywhere you go, the furry child can be seen walking (or being pushed in a stroller) with their family. From big breeds to small breeds to toy breeds & everything in between, nothing is off the table. Many restaurants allow you to bring your pooch as well for outdoor seating – and hey, we can eat outdoors almost all year round! Shops & restaurants around town also provide complimentary water by their front door for the drinking pleasure of your dog too!

Boutiques:

Throughout Charleston, you can also find many boutique shops strictly for pets.  These include (not a complete list by any means but these are the ones we frequent):

  • Woof Gang Bakery in downtown Charleston which caters to dog-friendly bakery items, toys, leashes and more
  • Lucia’s Premium Pet in Daniel Island focused on providing high end, organic food and treats for your dogs and cats
  • Dolittle’s throughout South Carolina which provides many services such as dog washing, pet supplies, and even insights on training you pooch
  • Hairy Winston Pet Boutique – One of our absolute favorites, the staff here cannot be any more friendly. They offer absolutely anything and everything one could need.  We love finding unique accents for our Charlotte (aka Charlie), like a flower to add on to her collar and add that extra level of “girliness” my daughters feel Charlie needs.

Veterinary Services

As for the care of your animal, I will not recommend or comment on those Veterinary Hospitals we have not utilized, but here are two that I will recommend:

  • Schulers Veterinary Clinic – Shuler’s has taken care of two of our dogs (Ricky who we lost to Lyme’s in just 2 weeks of us moving to Charleston) and Charlotte. They take a ton of time to get to know your dog and treat you like family.
  • Veterinary Specialty Care – the premier high-end veterinary center in Mount Pleasant, this center serves as both a pet ER and specialists center. I mentioned that families in Charleston treat their dogs like their children, well, VSC has all the specialties one would need if that family member fell ill. From internal medicine to neurology, oncology, cardiology and more, VSC has everything on site to care for your loved one.
